About

About Shakespop

Shakespeare has permeated all areas of popular culture, be it advertising, modern adaptations on stage and screen, popular film categories such as Bollywood or Marvel, art, comics, novels, podcasts, vlogs, blogs, and video games. Shakespeare is now accessible to all kinds of people in different fields of interest and crops up in the most exciting ways in various sites of popular culture. The purpose of this website is to try and bring together these interpretations of Shakespeare and curate conversations between Shakespeare scholars, Shakespeare practitioners, and people with a passing interest in Shakespeare as a cultural symbol.

About me

My name is Koel Chatterjee and my field of specialisation is Shakespeare and Indian film. While my published work is on Indian film and Shakespeare, my interests lie in Shakespeare in popular culture – whether it’s novelisations of Shakespeare, art inspired by Shakespeare, commercial products such as handbags and wallets in Shakespearean themes, or fleeting references to Shakespeare in niche film genres such as the Marvel films. I teach Integrated English at Trinity Laban, one of the leading Conservatoires of Dance and Music in Europe, and I occasionally guest lecture on Global Shakespeare modules and public facing events in London. However, Covid helped me reach a wider group of people across international forums through online events and conferences, both as a speaker and as an audience member, which made me want to set up a permanent accessible space to continue the sorts of discussions I have been having in the last couple of years. And so Shakespop was born.
